Neck Pain Questions & Answers
Plenty of neck injuries and degenerative conditions can cause neck pain, but in most cases, poor posture is the root cause of your neck pain.
For example, the average American spends more than five hours a day gazing down at their phone watching cat videos or reaching the next level in Candy Crush.
As a result of that much time with your head tilted down, you subject the muscles of your neck to significant pressure and strain, which leads to inflammation and pain.
Additionally, if you work at a desk all day, and your computer screen is too high or too low, you run into similar problems as your head is always tilted to see your screen properly.
Other problems that cause neck pain include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Herniated discs
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spinal stenosis
- Injuries such as whiplash
Other factors, such as stress, infection, and myofascial pain, can also contribute to neck pain.
If you wake up and can’t turn your head, or your neck hurts so much that you have to roll yourself out of bed, make an appointment at Edward C. Murphy, MD, PA, right away.
Additionally, if you’ve sustained a neck injury in an automobile collision or a sports accident, you should make an appointment, even if you don’t have any pain or other symptoms.
However, if you develop some tenderness or mild to moderate pain, you can take a few days to rest at home and try heat and ice or over-the-counter painkillers to relieve your pain. If your neck pain doesn’t subside with a couple of days of rest or starts to get worse, make an appointment for diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Murphy and Dr. Ventura provide customized treatment plans to alleviate your neck pain and heal the underlying cause. They may recommend therapies, including:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Physical therapy
- Massage
- Immobilization with a neck brace
- Corticosteroid injections
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
