Migraine Questions & Answers
Migraines are neurological disorders that occur from a combination of nerve reactions and the release of brain biochemicals. Each migraine begins in response to a trigger. These are a few examples of common triggers:
- Stress
- Caffeine
- Fatigue
- Bright light
- Strong odors
- Skipping a meal
- Extreme heat and cold
- Barometric pressure changes
- Certain foods and additives
Treatment for migraines includes identifying and avoiding the triggers.
You might not experience all the stages of a migraine, but they progress through four possible phases:
Prodrome
In the day or two before your headache begins, you may notice subtle signs of a pending migraine, such as mood changes or food cravings.
Aura
About one-third of migraine patients experience an aura, which occurs about 30 minutes before your headache pain begins. Many patients experience vision changes, such as seeing flashes of light or wavy lines in your field of vision. You may also experience changes in speech, movement, or touch.
Attack
This stage marks the start of your migraine. During a migraine attack you’ll experience:
- Severe, throbbing pain
- Pain around one or both temples
- Nausea and vomiting
- Vertigo (sensation of spinning)
- Sensitivity to lights, smells, sounds, and touch
Migraines always last at least four hours, and they may go as long as three days.
Post-drome
You may continue to experience symptoms up to a day after your migraine ends. These symptoms include dizziness, confusion, weakness, and ongoing sensitivities.
At Edward C. Murphy, MD, you can depend on comprehensive neurological and chiropractic care for your migraines. Studies show that chiropractic care, as a nonmedical line of treatment, may help relieve migraine pain. Dr. Ventura offers chiropractic techniques such as:
- Spinal manipulative therapy
- Trigger point therapy
- Therapeutic massage
- Strengthening and stretching exercises
However, many migraine patients benefit from medical care. Dr. Murphy has extensive experience relieving migraine pain, developing customized treatment plans that may include:
Medications
Some medications reduce the severity and length of your pain when they’re taken at the first sign of a migraine. You may also take daily medications that prevent future migraines, reducing their frequency and severity.
Nerve block
Dr. Murphy offers advanced treatments such as an occipital nerve block, which relieves migraine pain that persists despite medication.
Botox injections
Patients with chronic migraine may get relief from Botox® injections, a preventive treatment that can significantly reduce the frequency of future migraines.
